I am a Kansas City, Missouri native (well a suburb, anyway) who was dragged kicking and screaming across the state line about 5 years ago into Kansas. One look at my driver’s license will tell you just how happy I was about it. My husband had decided to leave the world of public service as an assistant prosecuting attorney to work as an in-house counsel of a geotechnical engineering firm. Because I have a Criminal Justice degree and have worked in the legal world also, I always enjoyed talking about work with him. Now he comes home talking about dirt and foundation and rocks and my eyes glaze over! Thank goodness there is still a legal aspect that I can relate to. About the same time we moved across the state line I left my professional career to stay home with our then 2 daughters. In order to help supplement our income, I opened an in-home day care and I provide care to 2 full-time and 1 part-time children. In 2005 our little family grew by one more.
My days are filled with caring for our three girls: My oldest daughter (Michelangelo or MA for short) is in 6th grade and is a true tom-boy. She loves crafts, drawing and sculpting with clay (hence the nickname.) My middle daughter (Diva) is in kindergarten and although she and my older daughter are carbon copies of each other in looks, they couldn't be more different in personality. Diva loves to play with dolls, wear princess clothes and dresses and pushing MA’s buttons. She is rotten to the core but uses to big blue eyes to win you over! My third daughter (Peanut) has yet to show her preference in dress so I still get to make the choices. She is a happy little thing and loves to play with her sisters and tease her mom. Although she is 3 years old, she is about the size of a 1 year old and 20 pounds soaking wet. When she was born we learned she had Down syndrome and this introduced us to a whole new world. She is a true blessing and has taught us so much in her 3 years of life. She makes all of us better people and has given me new direction in life as an advocate not only for people with Down syndrome but all children and people with special needs.
In addition to caring for our children, I enjoy sewing and blogging. I am venturing into a career of freelance writing and hope to write a children’s book series one day.
