Rainy Days

It’s been raining all day. Allie and I are getting bored and mommy is busy. “Mommy, what can we do?” I asked.

“Why don’t you go outside and play.”

“But, Mommy, it’s raining”

“So, it’s just a nice spring rain. There isn’t any lightening or thunder. I used to have fun playing in the rain when I was a little girl.” Mommy helped us get on our raincoats. We didn’t have any rain shoes, but mommy said it was warm enough to go barefoot. Mommy gave Allie and me an umbrella and we went out to the back yard.

At first Allie just stood there. She didn’t like the water hitting her face. “It’s ok, Allie, it’s just like being in a big shower. Come on, let’s go play!” Allie thought about it for a few minutes and then started running to the swing set. Allie loves to slide. “Look, Allie, it’s a water slide!” We took turns sliding down the slide. There was a big puddle of water at the bottom of the slide that Allie kept playing in. “Allie, move. It’s my turn.” Allie ran around to the ladder again and I slid down on my tummy. The bottom of the slide has a rubbery bottom that is all squishy. Water keeps coming up around my feet when I stand on it.

Allie got tired of sliding and ran over to a big, muddy puddle of water. She started jumping in it and splashing. She had mud drops all over her face. I grabbed my umbrella from under the swing set and ran over to play with her. We jumped around and around and then Allie sat down. We started laughing. Then we started making mud pies. I found a stick and started stirring up the dirt. It was all ooey and gooey. Allie picked some up and started rubbing it on her legs.

“Girls, that’s enough! You are making a huge mess. Are you ready to come in yet?”

“Aah, can we have a few more minutes, pleeease?” I yelled.

“Ok, but find something a little less messy to do, ok?” Mommy said.

“Ok! Come on Allie, let’s go pick some flowers!” We couldn’t find any flowers to pick so we started looking under rocks for rolly pollies. It’s fun to pick them up and watch them roll into a ball. Allie didn’t like letting them crawl on her, but she liked watching them.

Finally it was time to go in. Mommy told us to take off our wet clothes. We left them by the back door and went up to the bathroom in our underwear. Allie thought that was really funny. Mommy gave us a quick bath and we put on clean clothes. “Did you have fun, girls?” Mommy asked. “Yeah! I’m glad you made us go play in the rain!” I yelled. Allie just laughed.
