MA is a little bit of a hypochondriac. She has a tendency to make the smallest ailment sound life threatening. In the past I have made the mistake of dismissing an "upset stomach" as just being MA only to be cleaning up vomit an hour later. Now if she complains, I take precautions "just in case" but don't get too concerned too quickly.
Two weeks ago MA started complaining of abdomen and lower back pain. My first thought was constipation. It is a common problem with her. She inherited it from her mother. Then I started wondering if she was having menstrual cramps. Oh no, I am not ready for her to go there yet. We gave her some Advil for the pain and she perked up, played the rest of the day and went to a friend's for a sleepover. She came home early the next morning crying and not feeling well and with a fever. So the illness began in our home. Since she continued to complain of right lower abdominal pain I took her to the doctor. They did some blood work and tested for strep. All looked well so they thought it probably wasn't appendicitis and sent us home. By Thursday the fever was gone and she was doing well. Monday the fever came back but I assumed she just got the flu from me. It lasted two days and she was better. Saturday the fever and abdominal pain were back. By this point I was really starting to get worried and called the doctor. They again decided to wait and see.
We had planned to go to my in-laws for Easter and since Advil usually helped reduce MA's fever and diminish the pain we decided to make the trip. The Advil didn't work as well for MA yesterday. I planned to take her to the doctor today, but decided to go to Children's Mercy Urgent Care last night. I figured the doctor may not be able to do tests in the office and we'd end up at the hospital anyway, so I loaded her up and off we went. I was getting pretty scared at this point. I didn't know what was going on and she had been sick off and on for 2 weeks.
We started off with a flu and strep test. Both came back negative. We took an x-ray of her abdomen to see if it was just constipation. She had a little more stool than normal, but not enough to definitively say, "Yep, that's the problem." Next we did some non-specific blood tests. One came back fine but the other came back slightly elevated. The doctor was concerned the location of the pain was where the appendix is so wanted to rule out appendicitis. The best way to do this is with a CAT scan. In order to get a good reading on the CAT scan, you need to drink this stuff, wait 30 minutes and drink more. It's was not pleasant tasting. They also had to give her an I.V. to administer some other fluid during the CAT scan. It was about midnight by now and MA was tired of being poked and prodded and scared or possible surgery. She got all the drinks down, but before we headed to the CAT scan she vomited. Thankfully it didn't effect the test and it made her feel better. More waiting and then around 2:00 a.m. the doctor said they saw the appendix and it looked fine. Yeah! No surgery! However, they did notice some infection in the kidney.
After all the tests, a simple urine test determined an infection. Normally with a kidney or bladder infection you have pain urinating. She did not have any pain with urination so they didn't consider this test early on. It was a long night and we didn't get home till 3:30 a.m. but I am glad we went. I have so much faith in Children's Mercy and the staff is wonderful. Unfortunately, this is my second visit in just 4 months but I am grateful to know my children will be well taken care of and a diagnosis will be found.

And the Diagnosis Is ...

Scary! The first thing that came to my mind when I read lower abdominal and back pain was a kidney, bladder infection, or UTI (especially with fever). I've had a UTI twice and never had associated pain. But I always know because the abdominal and lower back pain (a lot like menstrual cramps). Didn't they take a urine sample at the Dr's office?? That's usually standard procedure when someone presents with those types of symptoms - CBC and urine sample.
Aw, sorry she had to go through all that! Glad they got it figured out though. Hope shes feelng much better!
Hi Deb,
Gosh, poor MA. She sounds like a real trooper to go through that pain for two weeks. Thank goodness you now know what it is and have it under control.
It's great that you shared this story. Other parents are probably faced with the same situation, and if doctors don't do a urine test, now they know to ask for one.
I go through similar things with Hannah because she seems to always be complaining of something (stomachache or headache) yet rarely is actually sick with something other than a cold. I've begun taking her a bit more seriously ever since she threw up at Becca's birthday dinner after complaining of yet another stomachache. But it's so hard to know.
I'm so glad that they finally figured out what was wrong so that they can treat the infection and she'll start feeling better. Poor thing - that's a lot of tests! :(
So glad it isn't her appendix, but good they checked it anyway. That happened to my bosses daughter last year.
I hope she's feeling more herself soon!
At least you were able to find out what was going on, even if it would have been nice to have figured it out a whole lot sooner. Poor kid!
Hi Lis,
I wondered about kidney stones recently but didn't really think of the bladder infection. I've had my share of those and they are so painful that I would have thought she would have been crying when she peed. I'm just glad it's over and although I'd rather have not done the CAT scan for the radiation I'm really relieved to know it is not her appendix.
Hi Rylie's mom-
Thanks.
Hi Barbara-
She had a rough night, but I am so glad it is over and we can get her better. I wish we would have thought of the urine test a little earlier.
Hi Deb-
My nephews the same way, too. I talk to my sister all the time about how when we blow them off they're really sick. It's so frustrating!
Hi Melissa and Burgh Baby-
I agree! I'm just so glad we know what it is now and get her better.
So glad she's okay! Scary times with these kids lately, huh?
Poor thing! I'm so glad she's finally getting taken care of, and that you've got a wonderful hospital that you trust so much.
So glad it wasn't too serious. That's really not the bonding time you were hoping for with MA. If she's anything like an adult, just knowing that there's an answer to why she's not feeling well will help make her better. Hope she feels better soon.
That is the most horrible pain! Poor poor girl. Bravo to her for handling the poking and prodding well. And bravo to you for making it through another trip to Urgent Care!!
Tell ma that once she is better Id love to play wii with her if she came to CA
When I have an infection I don't get the burning when I urinate -- I get the pain in the back and the fever etc. I've had a lot of them over the years and they always ask me if I hurt when I go. I tell them no and they think I don't have an infection, but every time they've tested that is what I have.
They can really make you feel awful too...exhausted and out of your head. I hope your little one feels better soon.

Hi AZ -
I'm sure MA would love to play Wii with you, but I'm warning you, she's pretty good and ruthless!
deb it's all right i am up to a changle
Lesson to be learned: Always insist on a UA first, especially with girls, any time there is abdominal/back pain. According to our doc, more than 80% of the time any such pain is UTI related.
Glad you got her diagnosed and she's on the mend.
