Going Mad

When I was a kid and young college student I looked forward to March. March meant warmer weather. March meant flowers. March meant one month to my birthday! But, ever since I met my husband, March means Madness.

My father was not your typical sports loving man. Growing up I watched an occasional Royals baseball game or Chiefs football game. The Kansas City Kings basketball team left the area when I was very young. Thanksgiving meant turkey, not football. Weekends were for classic movies and westerns, not Wide World of Sports. Then, I met my husband and my world was turned upside down.

To say my husband enjoys sports is an understatement. The man eats, breaths and sleeps sports. If there isn't a sporting event to watch, there is ESPN or Sports Center. The first New Year's Day we spent together was at his parent's house. The worst thing I ever had to watch on New Year's Day prior to this fateful day was a parade or two. When college football came on the television at 10:00 a.m. I thought, ok, I can handle watching a football game. Little did I know. As one football game ended, the station was changed to another game and then another and then another. Football remained on the television until 10:00 at night. This was back when all the games were played on New Year's Day instead of being spread out like they are now. If that wasn't bad enough, my then boyfriend, left me alone to go upstairs to play video games. (Another of my least favorite pastimes.) That night when we left I told him I was NEVER going to his home for New Year's Day again, and I never have.

Today starts the beginning of March Madness. In case you are fortunate enough to NOT know what this means, it is when college basketball is played non-stop for 4 weeks. This weekend is the worst. Brackets float around offices and pools are entered see who can choose the winning team. Each year I get talked into filling out a bracket to play against my husband. In the end, he wins, but I often win the first round. I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I go by the name I like or choose an upset. I have two basic rules, I choose MU (for Hubby) and never, ever choose KU. I don't care if they win the whole thing. I don't care if they usually make it to the final four. I will not write down their name. My winning the first round does not do much for Hubby's sports knowledge ego.

It's a beautiful day out today. The sun is shining, flowers are poking through, the house is finally getting healthy again and my birthday is less than three weeks away. And yet, with all this goodness, life is tainted just a little with the impending doom of college basketball madness.

(Did I mention my birthday often falls on Royals opening day? sigh.)

I saw the funniest news bit the other day about March Madness. Apparently, some surgeon decided to woo clients to get vasectomies by offering a special deal for March Madness...Get the surgery just before and go home with a full sports package to sit on the couch and watch the games while recouperating. I thought it was pretty clever actually.

Oh no I don't envy you. I don't do sports. EVER and never did. I do watch the superbowl but only reason is because I like the pre-game show and inviting everyone over and eat food and drink Beer ;)

I responded on my blog but in case you don't see thought I'd post here too

Debbie I agree. In many ways Tristan has been far easier. As a new born he slept well, nursed well and was always content. My Chanelle was a screamer for years and now that she speaks she complains constantly it can be very draining. Tristan has attitude but is way more pleasant and easier to get along with than any other toddler I have ever met! I think he is the least likely to stay out all night or get into trouble with the law as well ;) Mind you my older son Justin went to a party and there was a guy with DS sitting there getting drunk with the rest of them so my dream of this has faded somewhat. lol

I'm a big Royals fan (okay, little fan, since there's not much to cheer about!) and Jayhawk basketball fan. I take a bit of a different take on all this madness!

I always wondered why KC didn't have a basketball team; I hadn't realized there used to be one. It's just such a big b-ball place, but I guess college rules! (Though your husband is on the wrong side of the fence!)

Ronnica -
We are on the wrong side of the fence. We need to get back to Missouri! It is so hard to find good Mizzou gear here, just 20 minutes into Kansas.

Well, since we elected to get rid of extended basic cable (and hence the end of ESPN), my hubby's March Madness days are short changed. But I know exactly how you feel because when we did have ESPN, he was literally growing roots in front of the TV this time of year.

One year my brother ordered March Madness on Direct TV and then called me. So we could talk about all the games he was watching. For a half an hour or more.

He told me which game was on and that in the corner of his screen he could see another game going on and then if he flipped to another channel he could see two more games and then...

I zoned out for awhile and came to again in the middle of — "Isn't that cool?"
"yeah, yeah, it is," I said and then went back to my "happy place" for the rest of our conversation. His poor wife. What a saint.

Well I guess the good thing is that while he is watching sports you can blog, and take care of the kids and wash the dishes and the clothes and clean the house... sigh...

And a slightly early Happy Birthday! :)

Hi Jules,

I have been spending some time blogging. The housework may wait, though :)

March Madness is afoot in our house too. I'm lucky that I'm currently tied with my husband, but I'm sure I'll lose in a horrible way by the end of it. Oh well. It's fun to gloat for one day.
(And my husband is an avid Sacramento Kings fan. That's where your KC Kings ended up!)

Hi Lauri,

I'm doing very poorly this year. I only chose 15 teams right. I don't even get the one day of gloating this time.

I knew the Kings went east but I couldn't remember where. I hope they are doing well.

This is a great time of year. I love all the Madness. But my brackets are awful. My nine-year-old daughter is beating me!

Hi Maggie -

So is mine! I had Georgetown going to the championship. My Hubby's not fairing much better and our 11 year old is kicking our butts! She knows as much about basketball as I do.

I certainly hope you took advantage of his distraction and took the kids and his wallet on a little excursion into the sunshine. To the mall. ;o)
