Jeans Solutions

MA has a problem. It's not necessarily a bad problem, but it is irritating at times. MA has inherited my physique: thin and a lot of leg. People don't always realize how short we are because we have long legs. When I tell people I am only 5'2" they are surprised. My long legs give the illusion that I am taller. People often comment how tall MA is and I tell them, actually she is short for her age. Compared to her classmates she is one of the shortest kids in her class.

So what's the problem? She can't find any jeans to fit her. She is a thin girl. In the waist she could easily wear a 7 slim, however, the pant legs are way too short. Even 8 slim risk the high water stage, but then they are often too big in the waist. The invention of the adjustable waist has been a Godsend, but even with this she often has yards of material gathered along her backside. I've bought her belts, which she rarely wears. I've learned how to alter the waistband, but frankly, that's a pain and I never seem to get it done. You know how you put off the boring jobs? I buy a new pair of jeans and they sit in my sewing area never to be worn. So, I've come up with this solution. It's easier and it solves two problems. She always puts holes in the knees so I patched the knees and add a strip of the same material at the bottom of the pant legs. I really liked how this pair turned out.

I am glad that warmer weather is coming, though. Shorts are much easier to fit.

Cute!!

Hannah has the same problem. She needs a size 8 for the length, but she needs a 6 for the waist. She even has 5T capris!!

We have the same problem at our house. Once MA gets just a little taller she can switch to size 0 and the problem goes away. Then you can get short, average or tall. I think a size 0 is about the same waist size as a girls 10 but I can't remember. Give it a try. My cousin didn't believe me and she was shocked when they actually worked. Some stores carry much smaller sizes.

Yes the adjustable waist has been a Godsend for me too with my tall and thin nine year old.(Karlie)

I have the opposite problem with Rylie though-big belly and short legs.

Very cool jeans!

GREAT IDEA! I would never have been brave enough to tackle that. But then, hot glue and staples wouldn't work well there. And since that is the ONLY way I'd even know how to start doing it, maybe it's a good thing I'm a chicken, too! LOL!

Very cute, Deb.
Yea, mending is something I don't generally get to, either. (be it mending or adjusting)

Hi Deb,

This is a great idea. I have a grand daughter with the same problem. Without the adjustable waistband pants, she ends up with a "plumbers butt", and is constantly hiking up her pants.

I like how you added the matching fabric to the hem. Ingenious!

Those turned out great! We usually have the opposite problem since my girls all have short legs. But they go through the knees all the time and I keep planning to try patching them in some cute way but never get around to it. I really need to do that one of these days! :)
