Potty Training in 4 Days

Can it be done?  According to Bridget Murphy, Board President of the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City, it can.  Over a year ago I took a training seminar on Bridget’s method, but frankly, I didn’t have the courage or conviction to try it.

For the past year, I did what I swore I would not do and chastised other parents for doing it.  I used disposable training pants.  Not as a means to potty train, I told myself, but as a way to make trips to the restroom and “practice” easier.  I made one excuse after another about why Peanut wasn’t ready, but I also fully admitted I was not ready.  I could not bring myself to venture into the potty training realm once again.  I really hate potty training.

But now, I’m ready.  In less than 2 weeks Peanut is going to be 5 years old.  She starts kindergarten next year.  I am sick of wasting money on disposable training pants.  Starting tomorrow, we begin and you get to come along for the ride.  Each day I’ll post Bridget’s method for that day and our progress.  If all goes as planned, by the time school starts again next Thursday, Peanut should be fully potty trained.  (I have to admit, I’m not completely convinced she will be, but I am not going back.)

In preparation for our venture I have purchased the following:

  1. 20 pair of underwear (Bridget recommends identical, but good luck finding that!)
  2. 10 pair of sweatpants (it’s all I could find)
  3. A plastic cover for the mattress (we’re going day and night all at once here.)
  4. Tomorrow morning we are throwing out all diapers/disposable training pants.  This is as much for her benefit as ours.  There is no back-up.

Wish us luck!

Good luck, Debbie! I was the same way with my son - it's hard but you have to just decide what you're going to do and then make yourself do it. The most important thing is to remain calm at all times (at least while you're within earshot of her!)

Well, I gave up after 4 days. 4 days in panties, and ZERO success in panties. Our carpets are soaked. Our couches are soaked. Our living room smells like pee and poop. Everyone is miserable. Kayla didn't care AT ALL that she was wet, no matter how annoying I made being wet. We gave up. I'm so stressed I can't even muster the strength to write up a blog post about it. I.AM.A.FAILURE.
